14 September 2000

• I haven't added much new stuff here for a while. First, the basic structure of my pages hasn't changed. Second, these days there are better methods of finding things and monitoring things for change than a file such as this. Thus, in the future I'll probably only put really important news in here.

29 June 1997

• Now that I've upgraded to LYNX2-7-1 which supports multiple bookmarks (I had stayed at version 2.5 for a while), I can make some of my bookmarks publicly available. As a result, pages which mainly served as pointers to information not on my server, such as my fortran or VMS pages, have become superfluous and will be undergoing some restructuring.

• See the readme file for the directory containing distance calculation routines; there has been a restructuring and some Fortran90 and ALPHA stuff is available, and plans for the future are briefly outlined.

• In case anyone hasn't noticed yet, I've moved from a VAXstation 3100 M76 with VMS 5.5-2 in Hamburg to an ALPHAstation 255/233 in Cheshire with VMS 7.1. It took me all of 10 minutes to install the wonderful HTTP server written by David Jones and to make my pages available. Probably the only things I'll have to change are the MADE tags (glad I have a global search and replace .COM file:) and the contact information on the main page. This should be done by the end of the week. If anyone notices any other problems until then, or any problems at all after the end of this week, please let me know. I've shut down the server in Hamburg. I had planned to keep it running as a pointer to the new one, but it was hit by the 9999 day problem and I don't know if anyone (unfortunately I was never SYSTEM there) will install the patch:(

• Until someone tells me it's legally OK, the draft of the Fortran 95 standard will remain unavailable. Trying the old (and hopefully again the working) URL for this will cause my server to send you an explanation.

  • I've now removed my distance routines, formally at this URL, and instead made available the ones I use myself so that you are automatically up to date (and I don't have to worry about keeping stuff consistent). As with all the stuff with phillip instead of helbig in the URL, it is not a part of my WWW hierarchy but rather is mapped to my `real' stuff. There is also a readme file.

  • Looking over my comment about removal of old files and my own VMS stuff I realise there is an inconsistency. Every URL starting with helbig/ (after the site name) corresponds to an equivalent directory/file specification, whereas those beginning with phillip/ do not exist in my WWW hierarchy but rather outside of it, the phillip/ hierearchy being a dummy hierarchy to refer to files outsided of my WWW hierarchy.

  • I'll be moving soon. As a result, my pages will probably move as well, though I might retain a mirror site here. In any case, I'll keep you informed and the transition, like the last one, will be absolutely painless.

  • Too late, folks---I am no longer for hire! The corresponding web pages, that is, those in the hire me hierarchy, have been removed. These are the first pages I've removed. In the future, I'll just remove pages when necessary and only comment on it here if it is really necessary. You'll get an error message when trying to access the page. Since all my directories are browsable, for example, my main directory, you can have a look and see that the corresponding pages are gone, just in case you suspect a bogus error message.

  • Our paper on cosmological distance calculations has been accepted with minor changes by Astronomy and Astrophysics. The published version will have the appendices published only electronically; here the full paper is available. I've updated all versions to include the changes. Changes: slightly expanded discussion in Sect. 2, typo corrected in Eq. (30), literature and URL references updated.
